Anyone else get acne on their chin from playing flute?
I keep getting acne from my flute in the middle of my chin. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm wondering whether there's something that's safe for my flute that I can wipe my mouthpiece/headpiece down with to kill all the bacteria or something.
Thanks, everyone!

Some people have more sensitive skin than others. If your flute embouchure plate is silver plated but has any pit marks, your skin may be reacting to the base metal which is a nickle silver or brass alloy. If your flute embouchure plate has no pitting, it's possible that you could be reacting to the silver, but that is rare. Gold plating may help for some people. I would suggest cleaning the lip plate with rubbing alcohol to remove any impurities. DO NOT use any type of polish on the lip plate. If you are using a polish or a polishing cloth, it may leave a residue that you are reacting to. It's also possible that it's just you. Most teenagers and even some adults develop acne regardless of playing the flute. Also, use an over-the-counter acne treatment (available at most pharmacies) under your lip to help dry-up the acne and remove excess skin oil. Wipe the flute lip plate after playing but use a plain microfiber cloth that has no polish. Hopefully, that will help.

How do I get rid of my acne that's becoming severe again? I've tried so many acne products, including proactive, tea tree oil, spectro gel, neutrogena, home remedies, and nothing could get rid of my acne. I then took accutane, which cures acne, and it worked, but a year later it came back so I took it a second time. Now it's a year later after my second time using accutane, and my face is getting horrible again (you can't take Accutane more than 2 times). What can I do?

Go to your dermatologist.
As for the cloths, if the cloth turns dark when it is used, then it is infused with polish. Avoid these because they're slowly stripping metal from your flute.
Just a plain microfiber cleaning cloth is best because it actually lifts dirt and oils from the surface of the instrument.

Indeed. If it's acne, it isn't being caused by your flute. You maybe allergic to the silver or nickle of the flute, which could be causing you to get acne. If it's a nickel plated flute, get one that is silver. If it's a silver plated flute, find a flute that has a gold plated lip.pied_piper wrote:Some people have more sensitive skin than others. I also play the flute and i have noticed that it causes acne on my chin. However, what i do is to rinse my skin after playing the instrument and then dry up with a clean towel. You could try this as well. I think it works for me.

There is a product that I heard of, it's called Clear skin max. never tried but they claim that it's pretty effective. you can give it a try.kazynaske wrote:How do I get rid of my acne that's becoming severe again? yes it is. i use to get a reaction when I played the clarinet. it was how i positioned my mouth and i would get a lil breakout right under my bottom lip. it was actually painful. chapped and it hurt.

I am also having this problem every now and then. Thinking of talking to an acne specialist. Will try out tips in this thread. Thanks

I have been developing acne due to my flute in the past because of its bad wood and more over i shared it with my friend who has acne so i changed my flute. I have used simple facial skin care products and my acne also disappeared.
