Advice / Advantages of new flute purchase for college

Post by Angus »

Greetings
We are considering purchasing a new (or another better used) flute body for our daughter. Given what she plays on now (very good hj and old well maintained Muramatsu body) and what we are looking at, we expect the price to be between 12 - 18K

As we bring these flutes in for trial, the difference in her playing shows dramatic immediate improvement.

We have been told by many that most serious students upgrade either before entering college or during freshman / sophomore year.

We realize how competitive getting into schools for music performance is, especially for flute and we have no doubts that this is the road that she will choose.
Any advice on making this type of investment? Does anyone believe in the possibility that a merit scholarship may make up for the funds that would be used for this purchase?

thank you - any thoughts are appreciated.

First of all, check out these posts.

Second, it is more important to find what she plays on the best. If you have that kind of budget, take a flight or a day trip to a larger flute/woodwind center and try out some instruments in person.

Again, it is all about how it plays, not the make or the model!

I have found that many students who upgrade prior to entering college change their playing so much once they begin studying on a very competitive level that they regret the purchase and want a different flute soon after entering college. Considering this and the fact that college auditions for most schools are very soon (not allowing a student time to adjust properly to a new flute), buying now may not be the best option.

For a flute purchase of that level, I would suggest waiting to see what the college professor recommends and wait a year or so. That teacher should be equipped to help with the buying process and have suggestions as to where to buy.

As for buying, Phineas hit the nail on the head. It is the player who makes the flute, not the brand or model.
