Book for music theory

Post by asoalin »

I keep coming across symbols in various pieces that I don't recognize, and it's difficult to look them up without knowing what they are called. Does anyone know of a good music reference guide/theory book for identifying symbols in music? My only option right now is to ask my flute teacher or this forum. I'd just like something to have at home that I can refer to quickly.
Thanks :)

Oh, and by the way...I have this book...

(Alfred's Pocket Dictionary of Music)

...and it is too basic. I need something that has more advanced stuff.

There is a wealth of information on the internet that may help with music symbols and music theory. For example, this site has a fairly comprehensive (but not 100% complete) list of music symbols: http://www.dolmetsch.com/musicalsymbols.htm

The next site has interactive tutorials on music theory: http://www.musictheory.net/

With a Google search for "music symbols" or "music theory", you should be able to find answers for most of your common questions.

I don't know if you will get everything you want in one book unless it is written for flautists. I guess the internet is your friend here.
