Theodore, I don't understand why you would want to bother muting the flute that is already quite sounding compared to other wind instruments.
Unless it's a case that you just want to see if it can be done.
If you do not want to disturb the neighbours why not try the old tired and true way. Play very softly, say a ppp
This is really a great way of improving tone ect , and it's not easy , especially when going above the stave but it can be done.
I've done this approach in the eary hours of the morning , say 4.00 AM and thereabouts and no one notices.

To mute a flute, place a dab of Blue Tack (the glueless mounting putty used to stick things on walls) just beyond the far side of the embouchure hole.

Oh and to add something else to my above post concerning not disturbing the neighbours whilst playing very quitely (ppp)
Here's another old trick also.
Turn the television set on to a low level and practice your flute with it on.
It's a curious thing about people, they don't seem to mind a TV set playing just so long as it's turned down low , even all night.
And they don't seem to notice the 'other' sound that is present. I have even practiced my Clarinet in the middle of the night that way.
