Hello all --
I wasn't sure where to post this, but I wanted to get word out about a brand new national flute competition that is being put on by the Texas Flute (TFS) (http://www.texasflutesociety.org). I know that it is also being announced in various publications like Flute Talk, etc., but I wanted to put a plug in for it here.
This is intended to be a very competitive event with good cash prizes ($1,000 for first place, $500 for second; no third prize this year). Brochures and more info can be found on the TFS website; just click on "2012 Festival Competitions", then click on the links to the Donna Marie Haire Young Artist Competition. The event is named for my late mother, who loved young people and music (she was a brilliant, conservatory-trained, pianist as well as a beautiful singer). We lost her 2 years ago tomorrow, and established a memorial fund to support causes she strongly believed in. It is this fund that is underwriting the prizes. You can learn more about this amazing woman I was blessed to have had as my mother on the website. After much planning and excellent collaboration we have had with TFS, my family is so very excited that this is finally happening! This will be a permanent competition held each year in Denton, TX.
If you are a high school student, please consider entering this competition. And if you have high school student, please encourage them to enter. It will be a fantastic event. There is a preliminary recorded round, with final contestants selected to come to Denton in late May to compete in person. The final round for this year's competition will be judged by the world-famous and well respected flutist, Carol Wincenc.
Good luck to all who enter!
