For school we use two books called
"I Recommend" and "Winning Rhythms". "I Recommend" has scales and different ways
to play them and their appegios. It also has etudes, but not any songs. I
personally don't like it as an everyday book, but it is really good for someone
who is really trying to work on scales. "Winning Rhythms" is just a book full of
different rhythms. It has about 30 lessons in it and each lesson has a theme.
Whether it's half notes or 16 notes. There's no clef so you can pick the note
and there is no specific instrument notation. It is a good assister in learning
difficult notation. It has helped me alot though I don't like to use it. The
books that I LOVED though (I "grew" out of them) are Accent on Achievement Book
1 and Book 2. In the books are fun songs that you actually have heard of and
while you're having fun playing them, you're learnnig a certain note, or time
signature or key signature. It also comes with a CD so you can listen to how
something is supposed to sound. In the back of the book, is an easy to
understand finger chart and scales. Also in the back there is a dictionary. I
was going to get book three, but all Book 3 is is a bunch of rhythms (and I
already have Winning Rhythms for that). Sorry for the long posts, but I believe
the method books used can make or break your playing. It's all about
motivation.

uses the Essential Elements books so when I started playing in Nov. that's what
I picked up. But when I started with a private instructor she recommended I use
Rubank Elementary Method. I was trying to use both books but I prefer the
Rubanks book and no longer open the Essentials book.

I think Rubank methods are great.
They really help with sightreading and becoming familiar with strange keys. They
also help a bunch with scales. Leanne

Thanks to everybody that replied. I
will check them all out and see how I like them compared to the Rubank book that
I have. I do like the idea of having a CD to work with since right now I am
working on my own. Thanks again, Kim

Thanks again, Kim ---------------- [/quote] That is the only disadvantage of the
Rubanks book--no CD. I am going to look at Accent on Achievement Book 1
recommended by dancingflutist3000. I like the idea of songs you actually know to
help learn.

November so I'm on Elementary Method. I find the book real easy to use. But I
also found a book "Fun with the Flute" for songs I know to keep it fun while
learning the essentials.

You might want to check out some of
Trevor Wye's books, like the practice books for flute. His books are good for
players of all levels but I think they are focused on helping intermediate
players. They are very popular books, so stores should have them in. I
personally like the Taffanel/Gaubert and Moyse books. I know some people think
they are old and stuffy and such, but they are really encyclopedias of the most
useful exercises for flute. These books don't contain etudes like the other
books mentioned, just excercises. The "Winning Rhythms" and "I Recommend" books
sound interesting, I'll have to check them out some time. -Bradford

I learned flute using the Standard
of Excellence books. It's a series of three books. Also, the Practical Studies
books by Ralph Guenther are good.
