has a Gemeinhardt M3 but this weekend we should be purchasing a new flute. She
is looking at 3 different Yamaha's, the Miyazawa 201 and Muramatsu EXB. She
tried the Allegro that you have and liked it but still hasn't decided. Kim

mother in her musical discovery. I get jealous sometimes. I've been playing on
a Gemeinhardt 3SHBGLP since August 2003, and I was overly-ecstatic about how it
played in its earlier days, but now, the faulty and poor craftsmanship just
doesn't meet my standards. Hopefully, I'll be able to upgrade to a
professional model flute as a graduation present as opposed to a car.

Poll- What kind of flute do you have?
krzymunkey & sakuramimato~ I am
spending a bit more to get my daughter a flute. Her current flute like
sakuramimato's just isn't going to cut it for much longer. We just had it in a
few weeks ago for repairs and it now has a couple of pads that aren't sealing.
This will be the 4th repair in 1 year. I guess I rationalize the spending in a
few ways... She works very hard at her practicing and she takes very good care
of her flute. Flute playing to her is what gymnastics, dance and hockey are to
other kids. I personally know a number of parents that have put twice the amount
I am spending into these other activities. For example, I have a sister that has
spent a ton of money on hockey equipment for my nephew because that was his
passion and still is as an adult..he now coaches hockey. Hockey sticks cost
$100.00/ea and they break often. I have a friend that put so much money into
dance lessons, costumes and competitions that it makes what I am spending on a
flute look like nothing. I feel confident that my daughter's interest in flute
isn't a passing thing and she will stick with it at least up to college. Kim

I think you're right, Kim. My
brother plays for a competitive soccer league and I can't even tell you how
much my parents spend on uniforms, practice reservations, hotels, balls, etc.
It's staggering. I was a gymnast for a VERY long time (which is actually how I
got into the flute-- I got a stress fracture in my back and the dr. said even
after it healed, if I went back to gymnastics, it would happen again and I would
always have back problems so I had to quit, and I had always wanted to play
flute and now had the time to do so) and my parents spent a LOT of money on
leotards (at least $30 each, and you need at least 4, plus competition which are
often $75), warm up suits, grips, club fees, bags, tape, etc. To my parents,
paying $1800 for something I've developed a passion for and will continue for
the rest of my life, just made sense. It's exactly what they would have spent
on my gymnastics, just all at once. Long post, but I just wanted to say I agree
with you [;)]

Poll- What kind of flute do you have?
I have a Gemeinhardt 2sp student
model. I think it sounds OK. After listening to Galloway on a CD and hearing how
flutes can sound I begin to wonder how much of that great sound on the CD is the
player and how much to flute being played? I like the sound of my flute through
the first two octaves but in the third octave the sound just isn't there-- but
then again that may be more me than the flute- actually I hope that is the case.
But then these questions; all other things being equal what is the difference
between a $400 and $3000 flute as far as sound a ease of playing-- then between
a $3,000 and $10,000 flute. Is there a point when you are just paying for
gold/platinum but not making a difference in sound and playability??

there a point when you are just paying for gold/platinum but not making a
difference in sound and playability?? AHA! the $50,000 question Probably should
be thread or two of its own. Not easier to play but better sound. Majority of
difference is the player. If you struggle with a certain octave you will
probably sound no better and maybe worse on an expense flute depending on the
cut of the headjoint. Can you hear 1% better? probably not but people may spend
ten thousand extra for a flute that sounds that little better. The next 1% may
cost $20K better. 99.88% of players that start on the flute will never play well
enough to get the value out of $5,000 instrument much less one that costs ten
times that. Plus exoctic materials do not necessarily sound better, another
thread altogether. Most likely players will end up getting a better flute than
they will need because they like it. Not because they need it. Then again you
dont need a Hummer to take the kids to school either.

I also have a Gemeinhardt 2sp,
except its nickel plated (or plated nickel). Its old, but i love it and just got
it fixed up. I'm looking into piccolos too. Anybody know how the Gemeinhardt
4sp and the Gemeinhardt 4psh or 4pmh are (couldnt remember which it was)?

Also, on the material a flute
has, though it may sound better, it's more about personal preference and
ability in playing rather than the material of the flute. I recently played on a
nickel plated Armstrong (that was terribly tarnished and nearly unplayable) when
all of my instruments were in the shop and my Gemeinhardt 2SP of four years
after its repair and I practically sound the same on both instrumets. The
Armstrong, being nickel, and the 2SP, being silver plated, didn't make my sound
any different from the 3SB I'm currently playing. It can improve your sound,
but for now, I didn't see much of a difference with materials used for the
instrument.

Gemeinhardt 2sp can not be nickel
plated the sp stands for silver plate. They probably made a 2np for a short time
although nickel has its own problems. When we talk different materials we
aren't talking the difference between nickel plate vs silver plate. We are
talking silver plate v solid silver vs even higher content solid silver v gold v
wood v titanium v platinum etc. I do not think anything other than a student
flute has been made with a nickel plate and those have been discontinued by all
or almost all companies. They were made because the looked shiny and didn't
tarnish, not because of sound differences. Most people love their flute when
they first get it no matter who makes it or what quality it is or what anyone
tells them about it. Then months/years down the road they may have a different
view.

information. People should buy what makes em happy, that is what I did. If they
have $3K or 10K to waste and that flute will make em happy or think it will make
them Galway, I am all for it. Me if I had that kind of money as throwing around
money I'd buy a plasma TV not a flute. It makes better music. lol My band
teacher hates my flute. She says its ugly and that if I had a decent flute and
practiced at least a little she is sure I could get a college scholarship. But
who wants to major in music? What to be a teacher and make $30K a year and have
to listen to people that cant play and never will all day? Not me. Me and my
custom purple flute until this goofing around in band is over.

Well, my daughter got her new
flute today. She decided on the Yamaha YFL 561H. It is solid silver, white gold
springs, off set G, b foot and CY headjoint. The upper register sounds much more
solid than her Gemeinhardt does. The key action is much smoother and quieter
also. It is a discontinued model from Yamaha and was replaced by the 674 model
which comes with the EC headjoint and Split E. Kim
