Bamboo flute fingering chart?

Post by thesignpainter »

Hi, so my brother got me this really cheap bamboo flute.
It is made from a piece of bamboo with holes and then you stick a piece of wood that has a hole in the bamboo and you blow through the piece of wood. I added photos anyway-

It has a hole on the back for the left thumb. The one who sold it to my brother added that hole and the last one after he asked if I know how to play flute so in the original flute there were just 6 holes.

I tried fingering charts I found on the internet, but none of them seem to match the flute. I also tried to play it like a recorder which didn't work (or maybe I'm playing it wrong?) and tried to figure out the fingering myself. I have no idea what's the name of this flute so if anyone knows please tell me or if you could send a link to a fingering chart that matches - that would be great!

Thanks in advance. :)

Excellent use of shadow. You have studied photography, I am assuming.

Fingering varies a lot on bamboo flutes depending on the bore of the bamboo, the spacing of the holes, the size of the holes, etc. That one looks like it will probably not be a standard european major scale.

Your best bet is to get a cheap audio tuner (you can download lots of free ones for phone and computer) and start with all the holes covered. Play, uncover bottom most hole, etc and take note of what notes it plays. Then you can mess around with finding 'in between notes' either by half-covering a hole or by alternate fingerings.

I've found that for many bamboo flutes that say, all-open gives you a G and covering the top hole gives you an F that covering the 2nd and 3rd holes and opening the 1st will give you an F# and so on down the body of the flute (varying a lot depending on the way the instrument is made)

Or just mess around with it and see if you can make tunes. :)
