A purple flute! That is awesome.
I've never heard of anyone getting a flute painted before, although I do know a
trumpet player who got his trumpet painted white and green. L.A. Sax is the only
company I know of that paints instruments. They used to have pages and pages of
pictures of the painted instruments on their website (but they redid it so they
only had a few crappy pics left.) They had saxophones in every color and color
combination possible...not to mention tiger and lepoard print! I have a flyer
from them with trumpets and saxophones in all different colors. I think it's a
nifty idea.[]
Haha, this one is my favorite:

O yeah, forgot to answer the
question!!! I play on what would appear to be a Geminhardt model 3B. What I find
curious is that I don't think it's silver plated...Usually silver plated
flutes will have an engraving that says "solid silver" or "silver plated" or
something to that effect on whatever part of the instrument is silver. I know
the head joint is silver plated (because it says it is) but the body doesn't
tarnish and doesn't say what it is made out of, so I think it is probably a
nickel alloy or something.

I've had, and still have, a
Gemeinhardt M2. Typical student flute. However, I find playing on any other
brand is strange to me and I wouldn't give mine up for anything! Such an
investment tho,they aren't cheap...

I play a solid silver Gemeinhardt
KG Special Custom with gold embouchre plate, gold plating on the inside of the
head joint, inline G, open holes, and low b foot joint. Although I love this
instrument dearly, and it's the best and most versetile flute I've ever played
(I can go from playing very bright Bach sonatas to playing "dirty" Ian Anderson
type songs without missing a beat.) I think it's time to move on to a pro flute
that will last me for the next 30 years, as I'll either go to Juliard or
Eastman for college. I've heard a lot of bad things about Gemeinhardts, and
I'm a little surprised as I put my old 2sp through hell untill I finaly needed
to move on to an open hole flute, and I've done more with my current flute then
some proffesionals, and only had to have a spring put back into place after it
got caught on my cleaning rag. For anyone who's looking for a flute that won't
cost them an arm and a leg, but will sound beautifull, I would suggest a
Gemeinhardt. I will say that aren't perfect for a proffesional, just because of
they can be a little unresponsive at times, but for anyone else, they're
wonderfull. I have to say, I'm very offended at F-Diddy's comment about why
would anyone want to be a proffesional flutest. There are many other things you
can do with a music degree that aren't teaching, and you can make a lot of
money as a musician. Some symphony's pay over $100,000 a year to their
musicians, and you can also make a lot of money conducting. And being a
proffesional musician is about doing something you love. In a world where so
many people hate their job it's good to know that some people at least still
enjoy their jobs. I play piccolo and alto flute as well, and am currently in the
market, so to speak. I have a half plastic piccolo made by artley right now, and
it's the worst instrument I've ever played. It won't hold tune or stay in
key, and I'm spending $10-40 a week on keeping it playable, so I'm looking for
a wood piccolo for sale. I would like to buy used, so if anyone knows of any
e-mail me. The same goes for alto flute. I found a Gemeinhardt for $2300 but I
would like to buy one used so that it will be less expensive. So that's the
flute I play, and my few rants, Kimbralwyn [;)]
If
anyone knows of an alto and/or bass flute for under $2,000 please e-mail me at
vampire_kitsune_demon@yahoo.com no artleys please.

You are offended because you mis
understand. Getting into Juliard or Eastman for college you must be almost all
world player and maybe your future is an orchestra job paying 100K a year. But
look at who holds those handful of jobs that pay at that level at the dozen or
so big enough cities to pay that kind of salary? How long have they been there?
20 years? longer? Getting a 100K job playing in an orchestra is less likely than
winning the lottery for millions. That is a true statistic. I am just being
realistic about my future. I dont think I would have any problem getting a flute
performance degree from a decent college although not Juliard or Eastman but a
good school. But even then what will there be 100 applicants 500? for an opening
that comes up every few years? And 100K we aren't talking seconds we are
talking principal. Seconds and smaller city orchestras may pay 30K or be
voluntary positions. Not really putting food on the table money. So if that is
your path, great for you. For me I don't see myself teaching flute to kids
because their parents have money and not because the kids have talent or want to
practice for years with the dream of being principal in a major orchestra
dancing unrealisticly in my head. I wish you luck in your dream of getting into
Juliard or Eastman for college and ending up as principal for a major orchestra.
But don't be offended because it isn't my dream or because I am going to be
more realistic and buy a lottery ticket.

Gemeinhardt M2? They haven't
even made those for what 10 years? Used to be a standard student flute for first
couple of years. A workhorse in Gemeinhardts heyday. It may just be in our
school system but it seems like the kids that started real early like 3rd or 4th
grade usually do great until about 7th grade when they usually start falling
further and further behind. I wonder if its because their parents instead of a
band director picked their instrument of choice. Or maybe they get sick of
practicing sooner.

Kudos to Kimbralwyn for pursuing
a music major...and at Julliard or Eastman, too![:)] Being a professional
flutist would be my dream job...I mean...you sit around and play your flute all
day. Sounds like my kind of job! Some symphonys do pay $100,000 a year, but
sadly, many pay considerably less. But I think that if you're in a job that you
love, then you wouldn't care how much you make (hence the
musicians-living-on-the-streets stereotype). I think that FluteDiddy is a very
insensitive person. I don't think you should shoot down people's dreams for a
future in music, especially when we're on a FLUTE message board discussing our
passion for FLUTE playing. We need more musicians in the world. (especially more
flute players[:)])

In what way was I shooting down
dreams? In the same way as your mention of most orchestras paying far less? So
in giving out information I was being insensitive. I think her dreams are
wonderful and if you love what you are doing you should go for it. I simply dont
have that dream for myself, it wouldn't seem too complicated to be able to
understand the difference. Playing the flute is fun. But it isn't my one true
love so I won't risk being one of the 10,000 people out there that go the route
to be a flute performer that ends up doing something else because so few are
chosen. They say in entertainment only go for a life as a performer if you can
not do anything else. I can do plenty of other things. So going through 4-6-8
years of musci school to find out that I am competing with 1000 people that have
graduated in the past couple years for one or two quality high paying jobs a
year isn't a future I want. If your heart tells you to be that one in a 10,000
than by all means go for it. But read all the people that post here that gave up
in or after HS and went after a more attainable future and then came back to
playing the flute for the fun of it at an advanced age. So by all means follow
your dream just stop knocking me because it isn't mine and for me wanting to
live in reality and not a dream world.

I like you F-Diddy. I know what
your purple flute is. Ha Ha!!! Give em hell. I haven't read all your entries,
but I will check them out. for you fluties out there what do I play? I got money
honey. right now I am playing a Muramatsu AD Heavy Body. That is just one of
'em. I like to play hard, mean and lean. With a dark MF tone that I can shove
up your. What about Platimum, I can actually hear that 1% difference. But the
audience can't. I have gotten standing ovations on my Gemeinhardt 3ssb. God
that flute sucked . is that solid sivler F-diddy. Oh please tell me. I have got
to know. duh. I have tried a few 14K gold flutes that didn't play better than
an old Artley plated key flute I had melted down to make jewelry. By the way
F-Diddy all the orchestras recieve funding by the national endowment of the
arts. if they were left to ticket sales, none of them would survive and there
would be no 100k gigs out there. What say you purple man. why waste your time
with knowledge about mediocre student flutes. Yamaha, who gives a damn. If you
like it play it. try a bunch out at the same time. if you like one buy it.
