Flautist or Flutist?

Post by flute girl »

Is there a difference between flutist and flautist?
And if there there is what is it? I''ve got the impression that a flautist is
a male flute player and flutist is a female flute player. Is that true?
Thanks!

I've always been under the impression that all
flute players are flautists, but I may be wrong [:)] "Flutist" certainly seems
to be used a lot more now...
..for
as long as i have music, as long as there''s a song for me to sing, i can find
my way, i can see a brighter day, the music in my life will set my spirit
free..

Well I personally would say that I am a flutist if
I had to choose. I play the flute ..I don't play the flaut. I guess my
reasoning is one of simple grammar rules learned back in elementary school.
There are many words in which you drop the last letter when adding an ending to
change the tense but there sure aren't too many words where you change letters
in the middle of a word to change the tense. I have seen this discussion on a
number of message boards and it seems to be a matter of personal preference and
perhaps a matter of where you live and what is more commonly used there.
Personally I just say that I am a flute player and reserve those "titles" for
the professionals :) Kim

[/quote] There really isn't a difference at all. Usually American people I
think say flutist while British/Austrailian/Europeon people tend to say
flautist. I personally prefer flautist, though I don't play a "flaut" I like
flautist because it sounds elegant.
