I have no professional training- William Hung When it
comes to student flutes everyone likes a different brand, chevy, ford, buick,
toyota. They are all decent.

I got an Emerson (I think model 8??) when I was in 10th
grade, as an improvement from my student flute. It was solid silver with a
handcarved embouchure hole. This flute was great for me as a growing musician.
The solid silver made a huge improvement on my sound. My Emerson lasted me
through college (not a music major).. it was only until last year that I needed
to get a better flute because I had reached a plateau in my playing. It totally
depends on what model you are looking at and what your level of playing is. My
best advice is to try out several flutes. I regret that I was not able to do
that when I got my Emerson.. so who knows, maybe I would have gotten something
better?

solid silver Now there is a whole nother topic. There
are plenty of plated flutes that are better than many a solid silver instrument.

Maybe William Hung stayed at a Holiday Inn Express? GOOD
Players make flutes sing, Great flutes do not make mediocre players sound any
better.

Another problem with some flute companies and I wont
just pick on Emerson. But many of these companies go through different ownership
over the years they have produced instruments. Or those in charge have had a
different quality goal in mind. So when you say how good is an Emerson or
Gemeinhardt? What model and what year was it made and sometimes which plant was
it made in. I did kind of assume the person was asking about student flute as it
is hard to imagine people looking at Emerson in the advanced flute, given the
current state of the industry. You can pick up a nice used student Emerson for
about 50 bucks as they have no resale value and are probably as good as
Gemeinhardt, Armstrong or the others.

My main point was that the poster should try out several
instruments, not to say how great I thought my Emerson was. If you're looking
at one individual player, his/her sound will possibly be slightly different on
different instruments. If someone is currently playing a really crappy student
flute, has become more advanced with flute-playing, and they pick up one of the
better Emerson models, there is a strong likelihood that they will sound better.
It all depends what your current level is and what model you pick.

p.s. Emerson does not only make student model flutes,
although I have absolutely no idea of how they play/sound. I would imagine
that if you were on a budget they would be a consideration.

I've never owned an Emerson flute, but I've played a
few. I like how the ones I played felt, and I would recommend them any day. I
would buy one, but Gemeinhardt's where my heart is... that's all I play now.
And on a sidenote, William Hung is my hero. He had the confidence to go
audition, and he had (IMHO) the best attitude of anyone in all 3 years of
American Idol. I had the his audition video on my computer, but I had to delete
it because it carried some worm or virus or something.

The Emerson or DeFord flutes are decent right now, maybe
a shade above Gemeinhardt. Depends whose opinion you want to go by, people seem
to develope an extreme opinion about instruments that aren't really a whole lot
different in quality. Most student flutes play pretty well, some are easier to
have in tune acroos the scale some break down less, but on the whole they are
all decent and none really good. Emerson, Gemeinhardt and some other student
flute makers, make step up and even so called pro flutes, personally I have
never seen or heard any of them that I would own if I were to spend that kind of
money but there might be some. Of the big time student companies, only Yamaha
really has an upper level line that anyone uses. To each his or her own
