Hi! - help for improving whilst living abroad.

Post by chinaflute »

Hi!
I'm an advanced flute player (i got my degree in music 2 years ago with a focus on performance) but i've recently moved to China to teach English. My big plan is to hopefully do a masters in a few years in performance but i need to get my playing back on track (i've really gone downhill in the last 2 years!) and i'm finding it hard to find the motivation when there's so little to work toward at the moment.
Does anyone have any advice on A) pieces or exercises to help get back on the horse B) how to extend my knowledge of my own playing with no guidance except self evaluation and C) any ways to make myself more desirable for good masters programs?
I won't be back in england for at least another 2 years and there's very little to get involved with musically here.
Any advice is welcome, or just an intro!
Thanks a lot :)

Id suggest studying with someone long distance who is suited to help you with your specific goal in mind. They could email you specific work, you could purchase the needed books, and do skype lessons.

Also, as amazing as living and working in the PRC is.....if your goal is a MM in flute performance (no small feat) then you may wish to reevaluate your position and move back, study with someone and train hard, then of course start auditioning for MM programs.

From the flute performance majors I know it takes a serious amount of focus and devotion
