Are Emerson flutes good?

Post by Fluteoholic »

My friend is thinking about getting an Emerson flute. Have you heard anything positive/negative about these flutes. Also he's thinking about getting a Yamaha. Which one would you choose.

I have never owned or played on an Emerson.

I play on a Yamaha student model and my daughter plays on a Yamaha 561 and we have been very happy with them.

I can say that Yamaha has a pretty good reputation as far as reliability.
I really can't say much about Emerson except that I know that they are pretty standard band instruments along with Armstrong and Gemeinhardt.

I play on an emerson flute and i absolutly love it. I got "the american headjoint" (seperate) for it and it makes my tone great. it's a good choice.

The first flute I every played on was an emerson. Even though it had been through a lot in its past life (like getting more dents that you would believe), it still has a darker tone that I prefer over my Gemeindhart 2SP... Course, it has nothing on my Sonare flute. If he is looking for a step-up flute, I really have to recommend Sonare flutes. They have a great headjoint, and they really seem to play themselves. If you're looking for something at the beginner end, I'd go with either Emerson or possibly a Yamaha.

I admitt that I am not overly impressed with Emerson beginner flutes. They tend to sound somewhat stuffy (for lack of a better term), but I am quite impressed with their upper level models 8B and up. I saw someone mention the American headjoint (I think it was PiccChic06), and I agree that this is a great headjoint that projects VERY well. A nice innovation for Emerson. :D

I used an Emerson from my sophomore year of high school through college; it got me in to the music major! (did not stick with this major, but nonetheless..)

I eventually got to the point where I needed a better instrument, but my Emerson was great at the time. I had a model 8 something. Solid silver with handcut headjoint.

I would just recommend trying out both the emerson and yamaha.. it sounds like it's more of a personal preference!

I don't know Emerson flutes, either, but as far as student models go, I recommend JAPANESE Yamaha flutes (not the ones made in the US). You can find these Japanese Yamahas in the US, but have to search for them a bit.
