Difference between Yamaha 225N and 225S?

Hi,
I am new to this as I am purchasing a flute for my kids. Does anyone know if there any differences between the Yamaha 225S and 225N? Also if there r any differences between 225 and 222? I am interested in purchasing a used one and do not much knowledge. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

The only difference between the 225N and the 225S is the plating. N=Nickle; S=Silver. In general, the silver is preferable because nickle tends to feel slightly more slippery than silver. Also, most flutes are silver or silver plated. Silver will tarnish but it also can be polished up a lot easier than nickle. Players with sensitive skin may have less reaction to silver than nickle.

As I understand it, the difference between the 222 and 225 is the key arm style. The 225 has "Y" key arms and looks like most student level flutes. The 222 has pointed key arms and looks more like a step-up flute. Otherwise, they are essentially the same. There is no difference in other features or ease of playing it.

The 225SII is the newer model (version II). There are some small differences but nothing dramatic. Almost any Yamaha 200 series model flute is suitable for a beginning player. Since it seems you are looking at used flutes, either buy it from a reputable dealer with a guarantee or be sure to get it checked out by a repair technician. There is nothing more frustrating to a new flutist than having an instrument that is not in good playing condition. A less than perfect instrument is a sure way to discourage a new player by making it difficult for them to play easily. Even an instrument that looks really good may need some minor repairs or adjustments. (BTW - I am a former band director who taught hundreds of beginning students and have seen kids struggle with instruments is less than good condition).

Agreed. At this if you're only considering Authentic Yamaha, you're well ahead the rest of the curve.
