Flute lessons

Post by cebrul »

Hi all,

I've played the flute in my Jr. High band for 3 years and it has been 10 years since then. I've kept that same beginner flute and throughout the years I have had bouts of motivation to play a new piece of music and would practice for a short period - so my flute playing/practicing has been on and off throughout the years. I recently got involved with my university's marching band and it has revived my motivations with the flute once again and I've been practicing almost everyday for the past month.

I am now curious about online flute lessons (through Skype) to maybe have better direction at practicing the flute. I wanted to ask about your experiences with having lessons - if you've been taught by a flute instructor... or if you've been fully self-taught. It would likely be to my benefit to maybe have at least one lesson with a professional flutist to see where I'm at and then go from there, but for instance, this one teacher I'm interested in is charging USD$65/hour. That said, I'm sure the $65 would be worth it for the service.

Let me know your experiences with flute lessons and maybe the pricelessness of having a flute teacher

Thanks!

Welcome Cebrul and hope you're enjoying playing.
Are you getting any help from the university instructors?

Hi Classitar! I'm enjoying it very much :) the teacher I found is from a different university/college than mine. Though it probably would be a good idea to contact my university's flute instructor and maybe try a lesson with her!

I've only had one lesson so far with this teacher and I'm actually on my way to a lesson this morning haha. Today I'll ask her about what level I'm playing at to see what I'm working towards. Last session she pointed out my lack of counting and how what im playing isn't actually Bach if I'm not following the count  Anywho, I'll also bring up how I want to join one of our community bands, so I'll have more direction in preparing for that audition (and also potentially auditioning for my uni's concert band in the fall).

The university concert bands are excellent ! way under rated

I haven't seen any quotes by Bach that he hated rubato 8)
Although a little time with the metronome doesn't hurt :D

Haha that's good to remember about the rubato

I definitely had to review some of my music theory with some websites! Thank goodness for the availability of resources online and in the library haha.
