What kind of band festivals does your state have? Here in
Pennsylvania we have County, District, Region,& State. This is how it
works...Your director selects you for county & district band. Then at district
band you tryout for region band and they take the top half of the section. Then
at region band you try out for state band and they take the 2 best. Also you
have to be a sophomore to tryout for these.
You know folks...

In SoCal, we have a ton of band festivals and stuff.
Most of the judges come from the SCSBOA, or the Southern California School Band
and Orchestra Association. A few schools (including mine) hold festivals for
other local high school bands. (Actually, I was just at one last night and I'll
be there again tomorrow...) These festivals are not necessarily interdistrict--
in fact, last year we had a band from somewhere up in Northern Cali come and
play. But most of the schools that attend a school-based festival are somewhat
local. We also have honors bands for all of SoCal and NorCal, but there aren't
any festivals for that-- they just have concerts. I suppose there are regional
and statewide festivals, but I've never attended one. (In marching band we
travel around, but our concert groups don't travel much.)
Haha, this one is my favorite:

Do you mean what kind of bands do we have to try out
for? well if that's the question, we have area, region, state and then you can
go to all eastern. I live in new jersey by the way. [:)] And our band directors
also have to approve of us trying out.

Where I live, we just have district festivals. Then
again, I'm only in middle school. We had our festival last Thursday, and guess
what we placed? 1st! Our songs were kinda easy, though. Here's what we played:
"Antares: Overture for Band" by Richard Saucedo "Tango Mariana" by Joseph
Compello "Alamo March" by Karl L. King

Congratulations !! It sounds like a lot of fun !!! I
wish we would have went to those kind of things when I was playing back in
school. I went to a private school and we didn't have a very big band. I am
sure you will end up with lots of fun memories !!! Kim [quote] We had our

All-State Honor Band, some California Judges' Association (CJA) festivals, the
usual SCSBOA competition festivals, and some in Northern California. Festivals
in Southern Califonia go from (school) district to city to county to regional to
all-state, and possibly some more in between. You can also audition for many
solofests (SCSBOA) and college/university/UC band festivals and honor bands
(Riverside Community College's King Karl King and John Philip Sousa Honor
Bands, Pasedena City College's Tournament of Roses Honor Band, Chaffey High
School Top Talented Students Honor Band, San Diego State University Honor Band,
and more).
