Hi Vanessa. Interesting questions. Here goes...

Just wanted to know why are you playing the flute now??
I teach flute and play in a community band to keep up my skills.

what got you started??
I was the youngest of 5 kids. All of my older siblings were in band, so I grew up with it. I chose flute because one of my sisters played piccolo. Since I was 10 years younger than her, it was just my size. Of course, she made me understand WHY I had to learn flute first. She was cool, and I wanted to be just like her. As an adult I told her that. She was floored!!!

did anyone help you??
Of course! Band directors, my sister, private flute teachers...the list goes on and on.

Did it take you along time to get just to it? ot did you pick it up rather fast??
I picked it up pretty fast. I had taken piano, so I knew how to read music well. Also, my family (the kids) sat around doing goofy things like trying to "play" a coke bottle, used several for different pitches, etc. The flute embouchure is very similar.

I just wanted to get to know you guys better and learn your stories.
Vanessa, what are YOUR answers to your own questions????? - Terri

I started playing the Flute in 5th grade, and played through 10th grade which was my first and only year in Marching Band. I decided to quit band to take a different class, but now I regret that decision (I hated journalism! LOL) I used to have a Bundy flute, it was bought used, and I sold it about 7 years ago. I have been wanting to play again, it's been 12 years.. My husband recently bought me a beginner flute (it's an off brand, but I am using it till we can afford to upgrade) I am re-learning most of it though I am happy to find I can still make an OKAY sound and play the basic notes. I am glad I found Fluteland.com though because of the awesome online resources. I can't remember how quickly I learned the first time to play, but this time around I'm sure it'll be much quicker. I sure have missed playing!! And now my boys (8, 5, and 3) want to learn too.. they think Mommy is the best player! haha..

Well... I like the way BrightFlute did it lol, but I'll keep it really simple so I can get back to this stinking hoof thing.

I'm playing the flute and piccolo in my High School's top band right now, yes, as a freshman. I was given the piccolo to play after the other upper classmen found out I knew how to play it, none of them like the sound of it nor do they like to play it. I play because I love the sound and the feeling I get inside when I know that I just might have played better then my own Instructor had thought I would. *cough again cough* I love suprises

Well, I was in the little Middle School band hall the day after my 5th grade year ended. Some guy was there letting different students about to go into 6th grade try different instruments to see if they wanted to play and what they COULD play. Plus the whole parent's find out the price of it. Well, I really wanted to play the Claranet for some reason (only God knows why) and my music teacher came up to me and took the instrument out of my hands. He looked at me and shook his head. I asked why I couldn't play it and he said that I had double jointed thumbs and thats why I couldn't. I believed him so I asked what I should try and he pointed to the table with all the different begginer flutes. THAT is when I became hooked lol Little did I know, you can play the claranet even w/ double jointed thumbs. But I don't mind, its just something that I now look back on and thank him when I see him. (And if your reading this, thanks again Mr. Norris!{Aka Nono})

Well, ^ and the directors at the different schools I go too. My parent's weren't very big on the whole fine arts thing, wanted me to keep on playing basketball. But also my flute instructor that I still have. She helps me more then she'll probably ever know.

Funny thing to that, I had my first flute home not three hours before I could play all of the begginers book I was assigned. Needless to say, I picekd it up quite fast even for Hot Crossed Buns and Marry Had A Little Lamb.
