Flute vs. Piccolo?

If you have both a flute and a piccolo, which do you prefer? I can't decide right now - I used to love my flute much more than I loved my piccolo, but now a stronger bond has been developed between me and my piccolo ever since I started playing it for marching band.

Last night at our 2nd competition, I accidentally dropped it and the part with the trill keys fell off! Luckily it was fixed before the competition started, but I almost cried! Pathetic, I know.

So which do you prefer, your piccolo or your flute? (We got the grand championship at our competition, by the way!

)

I love my piccolo to death but unfortuanately I can't permanantly switch because there are so few pieces written for piccolo. Also I'm worried that my hearing will be affected by playing it so often. That why I wear earplugs!

i prefer flute over anything!

i've never really tried picc before. but i dont really like the sound of it.. it sounds either uber cute or shrilly!

i love flute low notes =)

Hmm, hard question to ask. The piccolo has its good qualities and its bad, just like flutes do too. They go much higher then the flute in pitch and all but then some tend to go a bit hay-wire when you reach the high G above the staff. All piccolo's are different mind you and someone who has never played one will probably sound bad the first time they play it. The flute is about the same way but isn't so shrill. Hmm, good but HARD question to ask. lol ARGH! I can't decide b/c I love them both!

And no, picc's aren't good for fire wood, oboes are much better but can only be beat by claranets when it comes to that good smoky burn.

I play on my Piccolo more nowadays than my flute, but I think the Pic is a more limited instrument in a lot of ways.(Range for one!) even though I can play faster on a pic for some strange reason. A pic is also not very forgiving. However, there is nothing like doing a flute gig with a piccolo. People just do not expect what they hear when I play Jazz, Brazilian, or Rock on it. Also for a man

a pic is a female magnet!

6 1 way, half dozen the other.

Flute:
Easier to play than piccolo
More range
More flexibility.
Wider Dynamic range

Piccolo
Babe Magnet.
Makes for interesting convo after a gig(With Babes!).
More of a challenge to play.
Don't need a Microphone to be heard.
Playing jazz sounds cooler on one.
Fits in you pocket.
Once I got the hang of it, there are alot of tunes I prefer to play with one.

Well Claiken, don't feel bad about that. Not all people can get a picc to make any sound the first time they pick one up. It just takes time for everyone to learn to play. No worries

I love my piccolo. Bought it last summer - wooden yamaha - ooh so gorgoues. Much prefer playing picc, altho Im far better on flute - Really working these days to get out the high Bb (conquered it today) B and C on the picc- I have a thing on my lip, I cant remember what they're called - a pear maybe? which means I have to have my embouchure to the left instead of centre and it makes it just that bit harder.

Picc rules - love playin it in Symph / Band / Ensemble - you're da bomb then :p

yeah i suppose thats true. they go so high though. its nuts. if you already have a minor headache, do not listen to one of those in both of your ears. lol.
