i agree!!! it does suck when you're he best of the section! i mean its fun...but then you really do have to make up for everyone else. im a freshman in highschool band, last year as an eight grader i got fourth chair which was unheard of because i was right behind the seniors so this year im section leader and there is sooo much pressure on me!!! the person in second chair and i can play pretty well but the rest of our section....well lets just say they aren't great...and we get made fun of....even by our BAND DIRECTOR!!! and also i've always had a dream of being drum major and we vote for drum major but people are saying that they wont vote for me BECAUSE im the only good flute they've conspired the whole band against me and now my dreams are like crushed man!!!! we have chair tryouts and recently i've had to teach people how to play the music and its like sixth grade music!!!! and i also hate how none of the 1st part flutes will play unless i do!!!! sorry for whining but i had to get that off my chest

I do think it's commendable that you're helping out the other flutists in your section. When I was in high school band, we were all paranoid and scared of admitting that someone else could teach us something. But we were a very competitive flute section -- all six of us were very good, and there were two or three flutes of "All-State" quality every year. (Not all made it, due to various regional politics.)

I;m /supposed/ to help my flutes, but they wouldn't listen to me.
I say "That's a D flat" , only your right pinkey in a nice tone.
They go "NO, what are you talking about? That's a D sharp!" and puts down the E flat fingering instead of D flat.
My section is really really embarassing.
Ah yes, I got the stubborn ones this year...

Lol I have a 7/8 grade band in my school, too.
You know, I get really embarrassed in my band too.
#1) I lack a lot of confidence when it comes to band. Therefore my sound is terrible, etc because I literally shake in front of my band teacher. Then I screw up by accident and she has really high expectations for me and she literally blows up on me!
Not good...

Well, to me it sounds like both problems can be fixed. Kdell..... I would suggest getting your flute looked at by a technitian to see if there are any leaks or misalignments. Remnantpark.... just have confidence in yourself. If you mess up.... big deal. Dont listen to your band teacher if they really get in your face about things that you dont deserve. Now, if you are being lectured about not practicing a part that you should be able to play........... shame on you.
but overall..... these are relatively simple problems that can be solved simply...

Yes I practice. I haven't, then that'll probably be the end of my life basically.
I guess I shouldn't listen to my band teacher. She's so stressed that she blows up on me if I make a very teeny tiny tiny tiny tiny mistake by accident. I swear she needs a vacation.
I guess I need more confidence, but generally I am not that confident. My mom yaks about how I need more of it all the time at car-rides everyday.
