1. I play in my highschool's marching and concert band. I also play alto sax in a jazz group. My dream is to play in a great orchestra in Boston, New York, or Chicago.
2. I play an intermediate Gemeinhardt 3SHB flute. My piccolo is an oldie, but a super goodie Gemeinhardt.. I don't know much about the model, I bought it used, but I really like the way it plays. I't's super special to me, and my favorite thing EVER. I keep my horns super clean and in a new condition!
3. Probably either a Brannen Brothers or (you guessed it) a Powell... one of the wooden ones... I love those warm wooden flutes... *sigh*
4. I'm a big fan of Jeanne Baxtresser's playing, as well as Jan Gippo's piccolo playing. I've never actually heard Mary Stolper (Chicago Symphony) but her story of being a flutist sounds alot like mine, and I can't wait to hear her play.. I go to Chicago often, so I'm trying to catch a performance...
5. I love the good ol' Stars and Stripes Forever... On piccolo of course!
I also like Badinerie by Bach. It's always neat sounding, and fun to play.. Most of our band music is silly and cheesy, though, so if I want to play something good, I have to order it form the net..

Hi Symphony! I just had to ask...Where did you order the Lovreglio from? I heard it performed last year, and wanted to buy it, but could never find that it had been released by any publisher. It really is a terrific piece.Symphony wrote: 5) What is your favorite type of music to play or favorite piece you have ever played?

I notice that you and the original poster are from the same school and have the same dream flute. I hope you don't mind me asking, but why Powell, and why gold? Anyway, welcome to Fluteland. There's tons to be learned here.2cute4u wrote:1) What group do you play for?(college band, marching band, for fun)

The nice one I play for concert season is an open-hole Gemeinhardt, solid silver head joint, and I believe it's a 4SP, the other one I use for marching band (if I'm not marching piccolo) is also a Gemeinhardt with a solid silver head joint but it's closed-hole and pretty old, my mom's had it since like the seventies. My picc is a metal Gemeinhardt (can you tell I like Gemeinhardt) but mine's in the shop and I'm using the school's wooden Yamaha which has a really nice tone. I used that one last year before I got my own. Wooden piccs are great for concert season, but metal ones are better for marching.
3)What is your dream flute?
Hmm I don't know...I really like mine, it's pretty new, about eleven months old, it's really nice. I'd like to try out a gold one though, but I don't think that will ever happen.
4)What flute players do you enjoy listening to?
I like Hubert Laws and Sir James Galway...I saw him live once OH MAN it was amazing...he had a gold flute it was so gorgeous. He and his wife played duets...fun stuff.
5) What is your favorite type of music to play or favorite piece you have ever played?
Hmm...that's tough...I like classical, like Mozart, but I also like some of the weird contemporary stuff. I like all the pieces we're playing right now. We're playing Overture to Candide which I love, and we're also doing a world premiere of John Mackey's Turning at our state convention in January, and it's one of those contemporary ones that's all weird and crazy, but it's totally sweet. Then again, we're playing Bach's Arioso, which is absolutely gorgeous, as well as a Mozart oboe concerto and Invictus by King. I like all of those pieces, but Invictus is really hard because of how fast it goes (164 in cut time with woodwind eighth note runs). Sorry that was probably way too much information.

Poll
1) What group do you play for?
Mostly just sit in with jazz or jazz flavored groups.
2) What kind of flute do you play?
Mostly I favor my Armstrong alto flute, but have several C-flutes. The most expensive is a 1975 Artley open hole C-flute that has problems. If I play a C, I was have a brand new $45 Bestler chrome plated flute that works well.
3)What is your dream flute?
I would really like a gold bass flute.
4)What flute players do you enjoy listening to?
My most favorite player is Sam Most. Steve Kujala and many others.
5) What is your favorite type of music to play or favorite piece you have ever played?
Jazz in general. Bossa Novas are really fun.
