It's similar, but not quite the same. Playing bottles and playing flute aren't connected, in any case. It used to be (and this may still hold true for some) that some band directors thought you needed to be able to whistle to play the flute. Clearly that's not true, but they sure believed it!

lol before i started playing the flute i could whistle very well..now i can barely make a sound. it's sad.

i still cant whistle! I can play whistle tones, but I cant whistle! lol (why, oh why, does the word 'whistle' have a T in it? lol)
