can you help me?

Post by band_orchestra_geek »

Hi everyone! i'm new here but i have a couple important questions i'd like some advice on.

i'm a freshman in highschool and this is my fourth year of playing the flute. although i haven't played for very long, people (such as my band director, private teacher, etc.) seem to think i have really taken off and have some potential. i am involved in my school's band and pep band (1st chair in both), and a local youth orchestra (4th chair behind 3 seniors, although i got a higher score than them in auditions) and flute choir (1st flute). I just got into a Massachusetts district band as 2nd flute, 2nd chair.

at the moment, i'm looking for a handmade, professional flute, but I'm not exactly sure what kind I want. (it can't be tooo expensive either) if you could reccomend a flute to try out and tell me why you like it... that would be very helpful!

another question.. does anybody think that it is worth it to go into music as a career? at the moment, i am considering it.. but i'm not sure!

thanks everyone!!

p.s.

right now, i play a jupiter 711RBS..solid silver, inline g, b foot
my teacher plays a gold altus and loves it.. and since i play a jupiter (made by altus) and love it, i am looking at altus as well..

i am also looking at haynes, brannen (a little expensive though), powell (all massachusetts companies..its great to live in the flute capital of america!!), sankyo, muramatsu, etc..

I highly recommend checking out fluteworld.com. They have a great trial plan that allows you to try out flutes.

In my opinion, the best lower priced handmade on the market at this time is the Muramatsu EX. I also like the Altus 900 series. They are great entry level handmade models. Haynes has had a bit of turnover lately, but this may end up being a good thing. These are a bit more expensive, but definately worth trying.

It sounds like you have a pretty good idea of what is out there. The best way to find out what you like is to try as many as you can. Good luck!

thanks for your help.. i know that its been a while, but just letting you know that i decided on a sankyo SR straight from japan. in the US, the sankyo naming system has changed, so i was wary to get a US version. through WWBW, though, i was able to get a japanese one. it is coming in a few weeks and i am soooo excited. When i tried it, there was just this sort of click. i was also amazingly lucky in that this is one of the most affordable soldered tone hole flutes out there. i tried a few soldered flutes and liked most of them (LOVED nagahara) but they were way out of my price range. Sankyo fits me perfectly! yay!
