Bass flute microphones

Post by glassoboe »

Hello flutes!
I was wondering if any of you have had experience with amplifying your bass flutes and which microphone you found best suited for this.
The music I do is in a club setting so I need something very resistant feedback at high volumes.
I have done some research and it sounds like the FRAP WS was the best non condenser/dynamic pickup made - do any of you use this mic or are looking to sell one?
I'm also looking into the Barcus Berry 6100 - because it is placed inside the flute itself I'm guessing it would have less feedback issues. Do any of you know if this model fits the bass flute?
Thanks!
Caroline

Well, I do have some expieriance with microphones (had to use one for a solo in marching band), but I dont know what kind of mic we used. So, here is the meager advice I have. The best place I have found for a mic is to angle it just under the lip plate. if possible try to get a mic stand that reminds me of a crane (not the single pole, but has a pole and then you have another pole that moves up and down at an angle that you keep in position by a bolt. guitar players use these a lot). This way, you can have the microphone come down from above the headjoint, with the actual mic just below the lipplate. This is what we did, and it worked really well. As for a mic inside the flute...... I dont think that would work very well. It would obstruct the flow of air, and would affect the sound quality of the instrument. It might work, but to me it just doesnt seem like it would work very well. I would try it if given the opp.
