Hang out and learn from each other

Post by T8N2T »

I just joined the church chior and I feel that I have a little problem. I am find playing the flute by my self but with the singers and the pianist, I just can't keep or play naturally. I think this happen due to lack of practice with other. So if anyone feel like getting to know a new freind and perform the flute togethen then leave me a message, like a few hours a week that is great. I live in Lowell, Massachusett.

I have a story for you....

I practice a tune called Spain by Chic Corea. I mainly practice this tune solo, or with a playalong CD. I can play this tune, and solo all over it with my eyes closed. Well, I decided to join a local college big band. A tune I suggested was Spain. The director put me in a small combo with a trumpet, trombone, sax, piano, bass, drums, and myself(FLute). When I tried to play this tune with the group, I could barely play through it. The rhythm section was terrible, and the other horn players could not keep up. It was almost like I never practiced the tune at all. After some work, it all came together.

The point of the story is this. Playing with a group requires different skills than playing by yourself. You have to listen, and blend, catch rhythm cues, stage fright, etc.... The right thing to do is get use to the playiing habits of the singers and your piano player at church. Show up at more choir rehersals. Maybe make time to play alone with the piano player. Once you get comfortable with playing with them, things will get back together for you.

Hope this helps

Good tips

Thank for the tips but there are some problem, we only have chior practice on friday night and we perform on the next day. I do not have enought time to practice with them. My problem is just like you said "to listen, and blend, catch rhythm cues, stage fright". So I want to get together with someone to learn how to improve this.

some other things than what was mentioned before, is that perhaps you arent metronomic enough. As a complete soloist, you can bend the tempo a little, but when you play with others, it has to be right on the money every time, or have everyone follow cues from someone else to give new tempos.
