When I play slow songs the tones sound so gross!(I can''t
do vibrato yet so it sounds even grosser) Does anyone have any advice as how to
fix it? Or is it normal? ><>Larinda<><

Tone is just one of those things flute players have to work
on, and you don't have to be able to do vibrato to have a nice tone, infact
vibrato would probably sound disgusting with a bad tone. Vibrato is just a
'quivering' of a note, so to speak, which is produced from the diaphragm. If
you try to do vibrato and don't know how to properly, it will probably just
sound like you sound is shaking. Remember, keep lips a bit loose and use a good
amount of air. If your lips are too tight, the air won't flow through as easy
and your sound will more than likely be weak. Just play long notes and listen to
them, and try to adjust until you are finding improvements.

I suggest going through the piece you are working on, and
taking each note one at a time. Here are some things to remember about
tone--keep the head up, shoulders down, jaw down, tongue down (that will
definitely hinder your air!), and just try to get that particular note to sing
at any dynamic level. I would not worry about vibrato until a better tone is
produced. However, remember to keep the air in the front of the mouth and the
teeth separated. Do not play with your teeth clenched together. Once you fix
this problem, you will love your flute so much better! I know I did! Also,
always remember to try to make the sound consistent. Best of luck to you.
