Picolo for Irish trad?

Is a piccolo suitable to play Irish Trad as compared to the more traditional "D" penny whistle?

I used to play in an Irish Music Ensemble and 2 of us played piccolo quite often, more often then the tin whistle (I didn't have one, but the other person did. I only heard her play it in maybe one song..) I think it fits in well with Irish Music :)
