B flat flutes

Post by ddraver »

I am convinced that my old flute teacher had a B flat flute in his cuboard that he pulled out on special occasions (i stopped having lessons ages ago and am undergoing a minor revival)

Now, a few mins internet searching have revealed that these appear tpo be pretty rare - to the point where I'm wondering if they actually exist and i ve been imagining this for years :?

I ve found one on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Odyssey-B-flat-St ... 240%3A1318 (that was a long address!!!)

I'm only looking for a cheapy one to improvise and mess around with so that looked OK!

Am I making all of this up?

Thanks
DaveK

There is such a thing as a B-flat flute, called the flûte d'amour, though they are very rare and no longer produced.

Unfortunately, the one you found is a C flute (standard) and probably not a very good one either. The chances of finding an actual flûte d'amour are very slim, especially one that is inexpensive.

Yes Virginia, they do exist (sorry . . . too many Christmas movies :? ).

In the UK, flutes in unusual keys are a bit more common than in the US. It's possible (maybe not likely) that the one on eBay is a Bb flute. However, as fluttiegurl pointed out, I'd be suspect of the quality. I'd be leery of buying sight unseen without trying it and confirming the key AND the quality.

Here is a site that makes a bamboo flute in B. I have some of their flutes and they are of good quality. I have no experience with the B however.

Don't buy anything made by Odyssey , its not a great brand I had one thought it was good untill the silver started to come off, they use cheap pads which stick and leak.
Edit for a beginner they are ok but just that.
