College Student Looking for a New Instrument

Post by Kyle2690 »

Hello, I started my first year of college in late august. I have been playing on the same Gemeinhardt student flute ever since I've been in 5th grade.

The good thing about going to a community college, is that I have been able to keep my part time job. So I have a slightly larger price range than I would usually have. I am looking for used flutes, but I have no idea what make/model to get!

I have been looking for Yamaha flutes mostly. Can anybody else offer more advice? Like what models to look for, other brands, somewhere to buy a flute? Any help is appreciated.

There should be plenty of ideas in the FAQ in the "general hangout" section.

For the most part, just stick to better known brands. Go for something that at least has a "handcut/handmade" headjoint. The craftsmanship and design of these headjoints are a lot higher than most intermediate flutes. If you can afford it, try getting a completely "handmade" instrument.

Good brands to look for:

Amadeus, Avanti, Sonare, Azumi: these are all lower priced divisions of bigger companies that offer top notch instruments (Haynes, Powell, Altus, and a collaboration with Bickford Brannen for Avanti).

Yamaha (500 series and up is what you want to look at), Pearl, Altus, Muramatsu, Miyazawa, Sankyo, Powell, Brannen, Haynes, Nagahara, and many more.

Some are pricier than others (new and used). Try the instrument out before you buy it. fluteworld.com is a good resource in addition to Carolyn Nussbaum's store, Flute Specialists Inc. and several more.
