I am working on trying to come up with some ideas for my
daughters school to make band more interesting for kids so that they will stay
involved. I am wondering what kind different things does your school band do or
are there activites that you wish they would do ? Thanks, Kim

Kim, You didn't specify your daughter's age, but our
middle school does a "cabaret" in addition to the regular concert stuff. This
allows the kids to pick their own music, groups or solo, wear what they want,
etc. You get everything from Broadway to Rock. They put up tables, sell snacks,
etc, and use it as a fundraiser to help fund their annual competition trip. Does
your school participate in any local "Music in the Park" type competitions?
Those are usually held in late May. The band competes against other groups, then
the kids play at an amusement park all day, with the awards ceremony in the
evening. There are kids who stay in for that trip alone!

Hi~ Thanks for the reply. My daughter is 12 and in the 7th
grade. I like the Caberet idea. Unfortunately they don't do anything here
beside their concerts so that is why I would like to come up with something for
them to do. We need something that parents in band boosters could put together
for the most part as the band directors don't have a lot of "extra time". Can
you tell me about the caberet that the school does? What exactly does it involve
? Kim

Basically, there is no cost involved (the schools like
that). Our middle school has both a gym and an all purpose room. They have
tables set up in the all purpose room, and sell things like coffee, donated
baked goods, etc. Sometimes, they'll have quieter acts going on in that room.
Most of the performances are in the gym. While this is band sponsored, other
kids participate as well. There are vocal soloists, Rock bands, My older
daughter did a harp/fiddle group, basically whatever they wanted to do. In this
case, the band director approved the acts in advance, but there is no reason why
the parent booster club couldn't do the same if the band instructor(s) are too
busy. The kids like it because it is THEIR chance to shine - they get to pick
the music, choose who they perform with, etc. It gives kids a chance to perform
solos, duets, etc. Because of the food being served, the crowd isn't made to
stay in their seats (this makes it MUCH easier on the parents!). They usually
hold it in March - between normal concerts. It's amazing how talented some of
these kids are by middle school - they really can handle this kind of
performance. While I'm out driving today, I'll try to think if there is
anything else I can add. Cate

WOW I like this idea. So are the kids all performing at the
same times in different places? Or is it more like a talent show with one
perforance at a time? Are people just moving around listening to different
performers? Kim >>They have tables set up in the all purpose room, and sell

They've actually done it both ways. You can have a couple
of performance areas (gym for the larger groups, cafe area for acoustic, vocal,
etc.) or you can have it all in one area. I just got this year's notice home -
they expect it to take about 3 hours total. That's why you have to encourage
movement. Parents would revolt if they were asked to sit for 3 hours![;)]

get to pick our music [major bummer], we do have fun concerts and parties and
stuff. Also every year each band, no matter what grade goes on a big field trip.
6th grade goes to our near by mall and shop and eat at the food court. 7th grade
get to go to the city and play at the Music Mart (a huge mall where everything
in it has to do with music). 8th grade goes to the state capital. High School
bands get to go to bigger trips out of state to places like Florida, Wisconsin
and such. I guess that's not much extra but I've never seen a need for
anything extra. In band we play fun music and that holds us till our big trip in
the winter.

decorate your daughter's school stage for the thing, because my daughter is in
a Christmas Concert for the 6th grade band, with Mrs. Kasa, or put some wreaths
on the wall or something, make it interesting for parents to see. Kristin

Hi - it's me again. I was trying to think of other things
the parents could run. Given the time of year, it might be fun for the kids to
play in small groups for nursing homes, vets homes, etc. What do the kids wear
when they do their concerts? Our band director (who has a terrific track record
for keeping kids in band) found music ties - brass, woodwind, etc. Each section
has their own tie. While this might be dull for the guys, the girls kind of like
it. They also get band t-shirts, and wear those at concerts as well. Good
luck!

Wow thanks for more ideas. I am going to try and get a
meeting with our band directors this week and see if we can give some of these
ideas a try :) Thanks again, Kim
