HI. I am new here. My daughter just started playing flute
at the beginning of the school year and I was going on here to find her some
friends that play the flute. She is in the 6th grade. I have to say I am
absolutely Apalled at the woman by the screen name of "PENNY" In The Post titled
Brand New to Flute looking for some flute buddies. I have something that "Penny"
should know. My daughter has a Bestler Flute that I to purchased on EBAY. I am a
single mother that got out of a bad marriage. My daughter wanted to play in the
school band. I priced the top name brand manufactuer flutes such as Yamaha *yes
even used ones*, and NONE of them were in the price range in which I could
afford. Not having the ability to rent *no music store that offers this service
in my area* I went to EBAY in a last ditch effort. I read and saw the many
problems you can have with a Bestler. But with it being the only option I could
afford I went ahead and purchased it. She has had it for 6 months now and has
not had one problem with it. and let me tell you her and her "Bestler" flute are
holding first chair in the beginner band. She doesn''t know the difference
between her flute and a brand spankin new Yamaha. She is Very Proud of her flute
and takes extra special care of it. and I would dare someone like you to have
the guts to tell her otherwise.! Anyway, my name is Barb and my daughters name
is Elizabeth if anyone cares to chat. Especially if you may have a flute playing
child around her age. she is looking for penpals. Thanks.! Barb

Hi, I'm Leanne and in 8th grade. My best friend had a
bestler and most of the time it played fine. I just tired one out last week.
They're not bad. Great beginner flute. Congrats on your daughter. It's great.
If your daughter has the same strive in about two years, check out
fluteworld.com. They are the cheapest around and sell great flutes at about
half-off. Yeah, we got ripped off when we bought my first flute. It was a
second-hand buffet and we, I should say I because I worked and saved very hard
for that flute, paid around $400 for it. THen, we looked at fluteworld.com and
found my dream flute. I think its a Geminehart 3bsh? Ne way we ended up paying
about $625 for it, about 3/4 off retail. And I have found no problems with it
and I would advise people to check out the website. Tell your daughter to keep
playing, she'll only get better. I know that in the beginning, the leaps of
improvement are great and when you get past that stage the improvements are
small and subtle, but greatly improve your playing in the long run. Oh and
PRACTICE PRACTICE PPPRRRAACCCTTICCEE. And have fun. Flute can take you alot of
places. Musically Leanne

Well, I don't have a daughter who plays the flute...but
I was the daughter once, at a time when Mom & Dad didn't have a lot of money
for things like flutes. They bought me an inexpensive student flute. I didn't
know the one flute from another at the time, neither did they and quite frankly,
it never made a difference to me. I wasn't trying to impress anyone. I just
loved playing it and it served me well for 9 years...through all grades at the
conservatory and into the performance master class. To me, it was a terrific
flute. While the quality of your flute will make some difference, the bigger
difference in your ability comes from your love of music, the desire to express
yourself, being blessed with a little talent and...as Leanne says...PRACTICE,
PRACTICE, PRACTICE! MattMom made reference to a PVC flute making an incredible
sound in another thread. Coincidentally, I ran across instructions for making
one the other day and plan to make over the holidays, just for fun! Barbara,
please tell your daughter to play her heart out on that Bestler and it will do
just about anything she wants it to.

Barb, I have a violin playing daughter her age (sixth
grade/11). Neither of my children play flute - they preferred to find their own
instruments (even though it would have saved me a PILE in rentals.) But it
sounds like your daughter found the instrument she loves, and that is what's so
important. It also sounds like you did everything you could to make it happen,
and that is what it's all about. Does your school seem to have a good band
program? Also, if your daughter gets to the point where she she wants
private/additional lessons, try checking out the local high school. It will be
easier financially, and if you talk to the band director, they can probably help
you find a good match. Welcome to the board!

Hey Barb-- I'm a 12th grade flute student and I've been
playing flute for about 7 years. There are a TON of types of flutes out there in
the market and everyone's personal opinion about a specfic flute is going to be
totally different. It's going to be pretty much up to your daughter throughout
her musical career to figure out what she likes and doesn't like regardless of
what other people think. For example, a lot of people on this message board
don't seem to like Gemeinhardt flutes very much (from what I've seen). I've
had my Gemeinhardt 3B for...6 years now and it has served me VERY well, through
2 years of middle school band and 4 seasons of high school marching band. A
flute that works well for one person might not work so well for another person,
you know? Renting probably would have been a good option for you, but if your
local music store doesn't offer that then buying a used flute was probably your
best choice.[:)] Best of luck to you and your daughter![;)]

I don't think that Gemmies are not liked. Just that they
are realistically slotted in when compared to other flute makers. They certainly
don't make a bad student flute, it is one of the better and most popular
choices for begginers.
