Well, that depends. Most of the jazz greats did not have that kind of money to get "Jazz Lessons". IMHO, anyone who has to pay to be a jazz player is nothing more than a Classical player with a good memory. Granted, on flute, having a classical foundation does help your abilities. However, the best way to approach improvising is listening. Learn to play and memorize all of your favorite melodies, and pick passages out of them that you like. Then, learn how to play the kinds of things you like to listen to. Things like theory and pattern books are just icing on the cake. The best improvisers are the ones with the biggest Record/CD collection.

Lastly, notice I use the word "IMPROVISER" instead of Jazz. These days, jazz has a wide variety of styles. A long way from the bebop days. Remember, most of Hubert Laws recordings (for example) are on Funk/Commercial/Pop/Classical/Rock recordings.

In the mean time, check out Hal Leonard Jazz Play Along series.

This series has a good variety of high quality recordings, in many different styles to choose from.

Remember, when you are playing with a playalong, dont always try to play it. Just imagine what kind of solo you would like to play over the changes, then work on it. You may be surprised how fast your progress.

Phineas,

Thanks for the lecture, unfortunately not every cat lives in St Louis/New Orleans/ NYC/LA,and has their choice of musicians to play with. I have spent hundreds on MMO's cd's hal leonard stuff etc, but I am in a rural area, and nothing beats being able to follow or play around another musician.

I can play with CD's for hours, but they lack that live feel that you get from playing with another musician. And for someone who does not have that opportunity often, a seminar like this makes sense

I was asking if anyone had experience with the mentioned company, if you know anything, then I would appreciate the help

either way thanks fore your help

Joe
