gum and lip gloss
I''m a gum and lip gloss freak! I''m constantly chewing gum
and always have to have lip gloss, if nothing else chap stick, on and it''s
hard to play the flute with glossy lips. [:)] But one thing that a found to be
rather strange is that i tend to play better when I''m chewing gum. anybody
else like that?

i really recommend that you don't chew gum and play
the flute.. the sugar from the gum can get into your flutes pads and mechinism
and make it sticky, and unable to work.. it will damage ur flute!

You should NEVER chew gum when playing your flute.
You are at great risk of getting sticky keys and damaging your flute. Also if
you chew gum or eat or drink anything before playing your flute be sure to rinse
your mouth out well with water before you play. Kim

Wow I'm glad I read this thread. I'm not a gum
chewer but never thought about food or drink being able to damage the flute.
Good information. Thanks Any other helpful hints about keeping the flute in good
repair? I've read the cleaning tips that came with the flute but it only says
to dry it out after each use and use metal polishing cloth to protect the silver
once in a while.

hmmm..... well.... a couple things...here's my take
on gum chewing and from a flute teacher. i get somewhat nervous for auditions
and my mouth gets really dry. so i asked one of my flute teachers what i could
do and she recommend chewing gum, she said to make sure that it was sugarless or
i could damage my flute. so, i'm all for it honestly, i know the experience of
sounding better. also my flute mechanic says that the content of sugar being put
into your flute is practically non-existent even after eating or drinking
something with a high sugar content. you're blowing warm air into your
instrument from inside your lungs (where food does not go) and you're not
spitting into your instrument. so... i don't know...i like chewing gum. [:)]
and know that i'm taking a very controversial position on this subject.

Well when you eat something (even if it doesn't have
sugar) that's still food, and tiny particles of food and sugar, unless you wash
your mouth out are still in your mouth. That means that they are also your
saliva is carrying them around in their. And we all know just how much saliva
can come from your mouth and into your flute. If any of that gets into the pads,
which is likely if you have been practicing a while and saliva has traveled down
to the body of the flute (where the pads are), it will make them sticky. And
this could eventually lead to air leaks. Although I think you could probably get
away with sugarfree gum. - falling4ever_3

last time i checked none of my saliva gets into my
instrument. on the other hand the warm air that i blow into my air produces
condensation from the difference in temperature between that of the cooler metal
and warm air. ever notice how when it is really hot outside how not as much
condensation drips out of the flute where as in a colder situation such as an
air conditioned room the condensation is greater? i think if an experiment was
ever conducted to collect the condesation that falls out of a flute it would be
pretty close to really pure water.

I would love to know how you blow into a flute
without blowing in saliva? I wonder if you "flute mechanic" has too many pads
sitting around and is looking for a customer. You blow air out of your mouth
that is basically at body temperature and coming out of a mouth that is full of
moisture. That moiture is in that air stream and enters your flute. Rinse your
mouth, brush your teeth, anything you can to have your saliva and all else you
"spit" into your flute be H2O. Flute players like people[] , all have
differing amount of saliva in their mouth and it differs with other factors. So
the severity of the problem varies. But that stuff dripping out the end of your
flute is saliva and it is full of whatever you have had in your mouth lately.
Chewing gum while playing? sheesh do we really need to discuss that?

Gosh Penny. You don't have to be so sarcastic about
it! I chew only sugar free gum, I can't stand gum that's all sugary. Then
again, I'm not much on sweets anywho so don't count on me blowing any sugar
into my flute. Also, do ya'll clean your flute out every time you use it? I was
wondering if it's absolutely necessary to clean it every time seeing as how i
play mine a lot several times a day. Being homeschooled has its advantages. [;)]
