I recently just got a polishing cloth for my flute, and
the cloth is made by York, and when I use it on the flute it leaves a
silver/blackish colored residue on the cloth, is this bad? Is it stripping away
silver from my flute? Please help, i`m concerned, thanks - falling4ever3

perfectly normal. Don't worry, the polishing cloth is doing what it's
supposed to do, and the residue on the cloth is the "dirt and grime" that comes
from your flute like finger prints and oils. If you're concerned about that,
switch to a buffering/buffing cloth or a buffing/polishing combo. UMI makes
really nice silver polishing/buffing cloths that are sewn together, so you get a
2-in-1 cleaner.

Well that`s what I thought (that it was just removing
dirt) at first, but I cleaned the same spot a couple of times and it would still
have black-silverish residue left on the cloth, my flute is not that dirty!, i
don't think, lol..

spot over and over again and the cloth still turns black? That's normal.
Depending on how long you've played your flute without using a silver polishing
cloth to clean it and also depending on how well you've been cleaning it for
however long you've had it, it might be dirtier than you think. Unless your
flute starts to get scratches or develops tarnish and harsh abrasion from the
polishing cloth, you shouldn't be worrying about it. The cloth darkens no
matter how "clean" your instrument is. Just don't overdo it, and keep away from
your pads and corks. (You don't want to play with black corks, do you?) I hope
that helps.
