What is the purpose or function of a curved head? I had
never seen one till recently and I am curious. Thanks Nona

Dear Nona, If you are refering to a curved headjoint,
usually this would be a bass flute (playing one octave lower than the regular C
flute), since it needs to have a longer tube for a lower note. There are also
some student flutes (Yamaha, for example), for which you can have a curved
headjoint so that small children can play it and reach the keys easier. A curved
mouthpiece, on the other hand, facilitates a different quality of tone. There
are quite a few available by different manufacturers, and they are more of a
personal taste of the flutist. Good luck with your playing!
