How do you organize your sheet music?

Post by asoalin »

I'm using the "piles on the bookshelf" method...looking to upgrade my system ;) Ideas? Suggestions?

The Container Store has these shelves that can be stacked:
This picture shows my flute ensemble music (for 2 - 10 flutes).
There is another one in my office (along a different wall) for my flute solo (and etudes) music.
These shelves are deeper than they are wide so "normal" music goes in lengthwise from the side, while the large Leduc editions go in widthwise.

I have many 3 ring binders and put the music in sleeves inside, alphabetical by composer. I have binders for solo music, etudes, and exercises. Also put together binders for 1st and 2nd parts on duets.

I use filing cabinets with the suspended folders. Music is filed alphabetically but grouped by instrument - one drawer for flute, one for sax, one for ensembles, etc.

At the moment I have two large bookcases. I have the music organized by Era and type (solo, orchestral/ensemble, etudes, excerpts, duets, etc.). It is then alphabetical in those 'piles.'

I also have a lot of music books. Those are grouped by subject. I really need something better...

I don't have enough music to fill a bookshelf or filing cabinet yet (I also have too many actual books on my bookcases at home) so I use things like this to store my music (I can't remember what they're called):

so it looks like this:

but just for a laugh:

A few months back I bought a special bookcase/cabinet. Half of it is dedicated to the piano, 1/4 to the flute and 1/4 to the guitar at this stage.
I first had all my scores in cases on the floor, but as the scores (and the cases) kept growing, I had to do something, as I could not move around any more...
I will take a photo soon and post it here.
By the way, tomorrow there is a new book sale in Sydney, so I hope I will find something exciting. 8)

Regarding digital sheet music, it is very well ordered, with folders, subfolders etc.

Here's what I ended up with...I found these cute carved wood magazine files at World Market. The one on the left is practice-type stuff like lesson books, etudes, scale sheets, fingering charts, along with some beginner music. The one on the right are my intermediate-advanced song sheets/books (the books standing up on the left wouldn't fit in the magazine files). I'm going to do the same with my guitar, piano and other instrument music, and I will still have some growing room left ;)
