Somethings you should not do to clean your flute?
Well there are many
thing you should not do when cleaning you flute for example: throwing it against
a wall, sucking on it, hammering it. . . But more specifically (lol): -You
should not run water on or through any part of you flute, however, if you push
the cork out through the headjoint you can run that part (and only that part)
under water. (I, however, would recommend not doing that unless you headjoint is
severely dirty, like having clumps of something it it; also if you are going to
do that, you might want to have a flute savvy person by you to see that you are
doing it right and putting the cork back in the right place. -BTW if you have a
solid silver flute use a silver shining cloth (do not use oil used for cleaning
silver jewelry, it wears off too much silver) DO NOT wash the cloth. You can
wash the cloth for cleaning the inside of your flute but not the silver one.
Even if it gets black (that's expected) still don't wash it. It will ruin it
and won't be useable as a shining cloth again. Hope I helped! [:p] []

Also, if you used one
of those fluffy plume things to clean your flute, stop. Or at least don't use
it solely (use a cloth too). The fluffy things fall off get in stuck in odd and
interfering places on your flute. Yes the person that sold you your flute may
say it's a good idea, but my band director and many repairers say otherwise.

Well, the first thing
that comes to mind is using a dollar bill for sticky pads. This is a bad idea
because money is very dirty. I guess that probably doesn't fall into the
"cleaning" category but it is close [;)] Also silver polish should not be used.

Don't use cork
grease for the joints. It builds up and just makes it harder to put together.

I was told to put a
little bit of vasoline on my joints when they get difficult to take apart, then
wipe it away with a tissue. This has always worked very well for me--just don't
use too much vasoline, as your joints will slide around if you do.[:)]

The metal flute
should not be lubricated with grease or vaseline or anything like that. Wooden
instruments need cork grease, but it is not good for your metal flute. Greasing
the tenons actually makes it pick up dirt, so it gets gummy and gritty. If the
joint doesn't slide together well, wipe off the tenons with a moist cloth, then
dry the tenons thoroughly (they must be completely dry to slide together well.)
As for pads, I reccomend pad paper (rather than paper money). I mainly use pad
paper when the pads get wet (after playing for a long time) to prevent them from
getting sticky. -Bradford
