What do you teach a 7yr old?

Post by flute girl »

Hey all! My 7yr old sister decided she
wants to play flute. I have my old close-holed flute but it''s a little to big
so I thought I could just teach her how to read music and stuff. Does anybody
have any suggestions on what I could teach her?

How about a recorder? It would allow you
to teach her and her to actually play some music not just try and learn the dry
stuff without the fun. You can do more harm than good by trying to teach a child
too young to succeed on an instrument they can not yet handle.

He's gotta point, although, u could try
to see if you can get one of those curved headjoints. I had one was I was around
her age and it helped me learn. I've also seen plastic key extensions as well.
Good luck for the both of you. ~AJ

It is great to start teaching music to
young children. This from the biography of the person many think is the greatest
flute player in the world today, with all respect to Sir James Galway. Named as
"Instrumentalist of the year 1997" at the prestigious Victoires de la Musique
Award ceremony in Paris in February 1998, the Swiss-French flautist Emmanuel
Pahud is one of today's most exciting and adventurous musicians. He was born in
Geneva in January 1970 and started to study music at the age of SIX (emphasis
added). In 1990 Pahud graduated with the Premier Prix from the Conservatoire
National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, after which he continued his studies
with Aurele Nicolet. He has won first prize in many major competitions and won
eight out of the twelve prizes at the International Music competitions of Geneva
in 1992, Kobe in 1989 and Duino in 1988. On top of this Pahud took the
Soloist's Prize in the French-speaking Community Radio Awards in Switzerland
and the European Council's Juventus Prize. He is also a laureate of the Yehudi
Menuhin Foundation and of the International Tribune for Musicians of UNESCO. At
the age of 22, Emmanuel Pahud was appointed Principal Flute of the Berlin
Philharmonic Orchestra under Claudio Abbado. Before this appointment, he held
the same high position with both the Basle Radio Symphony (Nello Santi) and the
Munich Philharmonic (Sergiu Celibidache). However, the success of his solo
career has meant that he gives up the post for the BPO in September 2000
allowing him to concentrate on a life in the spotlight with concert and
recording work For those that dont know the principal Flute at Berlin Phil is
about as big as it gets. Sir James Galway is a former prinicipal there before
his solo career.

Since like the great talented athlete the
great talented musician rarely escapes his mid teens without being discovered
you can not start too soon. So good for you for trying to help your sister start
young and to want to do it the right way.
