Hello –
I have a Gemeinhardt 3SHB that needs about $500 worth of work to get back into top shape (repad, new cork, cleaning) – it’s a 1992 instrument I bought used in good condition about 10 years ago for $450. I’m wondering if it makes sense to put so much money into a 20 year old intermediate flute, versus putting that money towards a nicer flute, perhaps a Yamaha 400 series (which I can afford, but don’t want to buy if it offers no benefit). I'm strictly an amateur and I haven’t had any instruction for a couple of years so I thought I would seek the advice of this board.
Thanks very much,
Hal

Re: Flute Repair Question
I would not recommend spending $500 for a repad on that model. A new 3SHB can be bought from Amazon for about $780. Also, $500 is a bit high for a repad on an intermediate flute. Repads on pro flutes run about $500, but not for an intermediate. If you check around, you should be able to get a repad for less than that. Of course if you think you are ready for a step-up, then that would be a good option too. A Yamaha 400 series might be right for you, but it may not be. You really need to try a few different models to see what is right for you.
