will my practicing really help me?

Post by bendyrubberband »

for someone who has been playing for about 7 or 8 years should they be
at a fairly high skill level?
i have no private teacher and the first two years i ever played was when
i was in 2nd and 3rd grade. the past two years i had to learn the tuba
so i tried to practice the flute every chance i get and now, i feel stuck.
i practice but i seem to be getting nowhere. i take AM orchestra at
my school, but that is only for 40 min.
should i finally get a flute teacher? or just keep practicing
and get nowhere?
(my embouchure sorta get messed up after i started playing the tuba
and when i got braces... my tone just went completely bzerk)

If you'd like to improve your flute playing, finding a good private teacher is the most important thing you can do. Not that your individual practice isn't worth anything, but to really improve you need a teacher's guidance along with practice. I'm sure you'd really enjoy lessons, so go for it!

just practice a lot so you can keep it up. Getting a teacher may be a good idea. Its all up to you weather you fell you could improve more if you had a teacher.
best of wishes!

Ditto everyone else, that you should find a private teacher.

Also maybe consider a new instrument (although I don't know what level instrument you have now). I'm on my third flute right now, and the way I decided it was time for a better instrument was when I felt like you do, that I was "stuck" and going nowhere. It was like I reached a point that I was doing the best I could do with the flute I had. When I got a better flute, it was like instant improvement and I was able to get even better.

So that is something to consider, and when you do get a teacher, he/she can help you decide on a new flute, if that's what you want to do.

Hope that helps!
Cheers,
Emily

Finding a teacher is good.

Although, sometimes, a bad teacher can be worst than playing by yourself. (not that playing yourself is bad)

I had 2 teachers for flute: one was just a young student who was learning flute, so wasn't that much experienced. all i learnt basically wit her in 6 months was to do the standard 2nd octave scale.

Then, the second teacher came. She was polish, and shes a flute master. She also plays the piano pretty well, and now i'd like to think im improving on the flute. (although i might not be..Just being slightly optimistic here  )

Me and her nearly always play duets as well as learning more: right now, im doing meditation from thais, and canon.

So my advice is: definetly get a good private teacher. But thats not to say it is hopeless learning by yourself.
