flute question

Post by neoflyte »

Hi,

I'm new here. I played flute about ten years ago in high school band. Hadn't touched it for a few years, then the other day I picked it up again. It doesn't sound as bad as I thought it might (considering the time gap), but I have a couple of difficulties playing, I'm not sure if it is me or the flute.

On a few notes, I have to play very hard (and loud) to avoid a delayed response. The notes I have difficulty with are C-D in first 8ve; D, D# and E in 2nd 8ve. There is a kindof breathy/aspirated onset for these notes.

Anyone know what might cause this? Is it likely to be something in the flute's mechanism? or my embachoure?

cheers,
neoflyte :D

Take your flute in to be adjusted. Those are classic symptoms of a leak.

Considering it's been ten years since you've played, chances are you are part of the issue as well, but the flute will need some maintainance even if it's not leaking, so yes, take it to a tech, and then start working tone exercises and etudes to get yourself back up to a reasonable level.
