Pratice without the instrument?

Post by asamd74 »

I just sent my flute in and it was the only one I have. I won't get it back for another week. Is there anything I can do for practice until I get my flute back?

Listen to recordings. Study the music/score/piano part.

That is exactly what I recommend. I have even spent time with the score and a metronome in hotel rooms where I could not play.

Sing your music...

Did you keep your headjoint? If so, try some embouchure exercises... You would be amazed about how they could help getting a better tone.

Here's another idea. While listening to recordings or going through your part, also go ahead an do the fingerings like you would if the flute was in your hands. it helps me :) (there is something constantly wrong with my flute)

You already have some great ideas ...

Other ones - with your imaginary flute, practise your scale fingerings (sing the scale in your head if it helps)

Breathing ... try and practise taking deep breaths, and control the out-breath with a consistent stream. Maybe time it, so you have an idea of improvements.

Tonguing ... spend 5 mins or so practise touble or triple tonging
