i just bought my first flute (yamaha 461) and it seems real tight. it is very difficult to take it apart when putting it back in the case. what advice do you guys have about greasing it. can i use a little recorder cream or what do you guys recommend? i have been told that i need to be careful to not get too much (of what) in there as i don't want to mess up the pads ...
but it takes a lot of strength to take the flute apart once it is together. what should i use ... (haven't had my first lesson yet but am watching dvd's to get started) ...
thanks in advance.

Never put any kind of grease on the tenons of a flute. Unfortunately, some manufacturers of low end instruments recommend this, but it is never a good idea. For one thing, these are generally intended for use on cork, not metal. On metal, it will not seep in like it would on cork. Putting grease on metal tenons will eventually lead to build up which will cause it to stick more and may even damage the tenon.
The only quick fix I know is graphite (pencil lead) rubbed on in small amounts. What this actually does is fill the tiny scratches in the metal to create a smoother surface that allows the tenons to slide easier. I was taught this trick by a flute tech, and I have used it a time or two. However, if it is too tight and you are afraid you might damage the flute taking it apart, take it to a tech and have it loosened.
