First Flute
Hey guys, I've just ordered my first flute, and now im trying to figure out how im going to learn to play it when it comes in. Here is a link to the type of flute it is: http://www.eriktheflutemaker.com/Ice_age_Flute.html
The one I got was end blown and I beleive it has four holes on the front and one on the back. If anyone can give me some advise, like how to hold it or maybe a link to a place that will show me a few begginers tips that would be great. Cheers!

Re: First Flute
When I was a kid I would blow on a 30 odd 6 shell
casing to get a sound. I think it may be the same
type of blowing for what they are calling an end
blown flute.
There is a Online Tuner program you can run on your
computer and play into a microphone to find out
what note you are playing. Try some different
fingerings and work out a chart.

Cool, sounds good. Does it matter which finger is on which hole? Or is it just a matter of comfort? Im completely new to this activity.

Re: First Flute
That's a very interesting flute. Most of the folks here play the more common concert flutes. Your best bet for info on yours is to ask Eric himself. I'll bet he has some basic information on how to play it.

Generally with end blown flutes (or even with sideblown flutes) the left hand is the one closest to your face when holding it. Because it doesn't have the standard amount of holes (6-8) finger placement will generally be whatever is most comfortable. I'm a big fan of Erik's work. I have one of his flutes (and Phineas has had several).

Re: First Flute
Nice, congrats on your new flute. It is hard to play and learn alone, better ask someone.. a friend maybe to teach you the basics on how to play.
Re: First Flute
I am teaching myself to play the flute and are not finding it that hard learn. I have played other instruments before but learning to play an instrument yourself is definitely possible. A lot of instructions can be found online and seeing a video with someone showing you how to get started makes the whole thing a lot easier.psylocke24 wrote:Nice, congrats on your new flute. Of cause the best thing is to have a real person teach you but for all of us who don't have the money or someone to hep us for free, what can be found online for free can make you a great flute player on your own.
Another thing you should take a look at is music minus one. This can greatly improve you playing and is great fun!
