Hey, I'm new around here. I've been playing flute for several weeks now and I find it hard to learn without teacher. My friend who is a flutist usually teach me and gives me some homework. The problem is, I have no place to practice. I live with my relatives and they hate music and the idea that I play music. But I still need to practice. So, I think I could play at home when most of them are out but I cant think of how to keep my grandmother sleep when I play. I'm still practising my breath and my family said that I'm annoying so I really need a help here
Thanks
Gemma

I remember having a hard time controlling my volume when I first started to play. The key is unfortunately practice. The more you practice, the better you control your sound and the better you can lower your volume.
I will let the pros give you technical advices. I also learned by myself and I must admit I sometime have difficulty lowering my volume too.
Good luck !

Sorry to hear that Gemma. Sometimes when people need to be deaf, they aren't, and at other times when you need them to listen, then don't.
There are lots of exercises you can practice without a flute: fingering the music; tonguing the music; doing the breathing, without making any sound.
Otherwise, you might have to find a school music room, or play out in the woods if it isn't dangerous where you live.
I have the same problem so I play outdoors mostly. Just a park, or somewhere where it's public. In open spaces, the sound is less intense than if you're living in a flat or apartment. Don't let it bother you if you're not very good. You might prefer a cheap plastic flute to play doors ...
If you don't get your 'place' sorted for playing, then it will probably decide whether you continue the flute or not. Best of luck!
