So I have been playing flute for 5 lessons. I found the low octave very easy and progressed quickly.
The problem is I could not do the middle octave at all. I got a new flute (trevor james) and could get to middle but with difficultly and it always sounded breathy or with whistling.
It turns out the problem is I have a tear drop shaped lip. I almost gave up, but I read alot about some famous people who used off-centre embouchures and could still play brilliantly.
I am used to playing with a centre embouchure and find it difficult to form a off-centre embouchure. Does anyone have any tips on how to overcome a tear drop embouchure and how to form a sideways embouchure?
Thanks

Re: Tear Drop Embouchure - Help
This is so long after your post that you may not see it but just in case you do, or someone else does:
I have the teardrop thing too. I had a teacher who told me I would have trouble playing. I ignored him and I can play - my limitations are from other things, not the shape of my mouth. Don't give up. And I tried the side-of-mouth playing too and could not do it. You just have to practise a LOT to strengthen your mouth so you can get a very narrow aperture, you kind of have to stretch out your top lip.
In fact my current teacher has the same thing.
