Sixteenth note runs

Post by notootsieno »

Are there any tips on how to play sixteenth note
runs? The ones in my music are slurred, but they still seem kind of hard to
play! There are 16 sixteenth notes back to back: Bb, C, D, Eb <---slurred
together C, D, Eb, F <---slurred together D, Eb, F, G <---slurred together Eb,
F, G, Ab <---slurred together If there is any "secret" to playing sixteenth
notes, then I''d gladly appreciate it! lol.

Sixteenth note runs

Post by Cleartone »

Sixteenth notes can be played at many different
speeds. It just depends on the piece you are playing. In your instance, judging
from the notes you gave you have notes superimposed from the E flat scale. First
just play them very slowly with the correct articulation. If you play it right
adjust your speed up just a notch. keep doing this until you get it to the speed
you want. If you make a mistake playing it at a slow speed, find out what part
you screwed up on and isolate it. Let say it is just 4 notes of the sixteen
notes you have. Just isolate those and play those slowly until you get the hang
of it. Also I noticed that the set of four sixteen notes jump back down to
another note in the E flat scale. you may be having problems jumping back by
pausing a bit to make sure you start the next group in the right place. Remember
that each starting note on the four groups of sixteenth notes is part of its own
scale. you have a scale within a scale. Make sense?? or not? Also it might be
good to just get a basic version of the E flat major scale and run that a few
times. sluring in groups of four if you can to help you with the rhythm of the
etude you are working on. let me know if you need more help. There are many more
scale tricks I can tell you about.

Sixteenth note runs

Thanks! That helped a lot. Those runs are from a
medley of songs we're playing for the spring concert, from the movie Shrek.
I'll be sure to practice them.
