I haven't been playing for very long and I am trying to teach myself.
When I hold the flute for any length of time my left hand aches.
How should I be holding the flute to prevent this?

Didn't you joined any class for learning flute? I think you should join there so that you can learn how to hold and all the basics without injuring your hands.
