I'm kind of confused about embouchoure

Post by Korbflechter »

Ok , yesterday I had my first flute lesson taken. My teacher told me to to practise blowing inside the embouchoure hole, both normal and overtones , and with or without my right hand closing the headjoint hole. The confusing part is that I produce both normal and over tones but in different positions of the lip plate. I mean, when my hand closes the hole, I produce normal and overtones. Then I remove my hand and in order to produce sound, I need to turn the headjoint inwards. When I find the sweet spot, I again can produce normal and over tones. Is that logical? I mean, shouldn't I find one position the headjoint produces sound no matter if I close its hole or not?

Yep, with time and practice you will find that you are able to produce a tone without rolling your flute in. Rolling in can lead to poor tone and technique (I still fall into this some times when I'm tired and trying to hit higher notes). Keep practicing and talk to your teacher - get them to look at hour you're positioning the head joint and how you are shaping your lips - they should be able to offer guidance!
