G note not playing at all

Hello,

I just started playing the flute and still getting the hang of it. Right now I can play the B and A notes with little trouble and they do sound accurate. However, once I attempt to play the G note, nothing comes out. It just air. When I slow my air flow speed a lot, I can hear a faint G but then if I switch to B or A nothing plays there then. I seem to be at a loss to what I am doing wrong.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It could be you or it could be the flute.

Is it a closed hole flute or open hole flute. If it's open hole, you may not be be covering the G key hole completely.

Is this a new flute? If yes, ask the dealer where you bought it to check it to be sure there are no problems with it. If it's a used flute, was it tested or guaranteed to be in good playing condition? Again, get it checked.

Find yourself a local teacher and take lessons. A teacher can help you figure out what is wrong.

Seems like either you are doing something very, very wrong, or your flute is busted.

Forget the notes and the fingerings for a minute. Pull the headjoint out. Blow on it. Can you get any kind of a tone from that? Work on finding the right spot combined with your lips/mouth/throat muscles and focused airflow (you really need to get all of those things working at the same time - until you do, never mind anything else). You should be able to "get it" after a bit of experimentation. Once you have found that combination, then put the headjoint back in the flute, line it up right, and try starting with B. Work down to A. Maintain the same combination of lip position/muscles/airflow/etc then get the G fingering. It should be easy - G is not a difficult note to get (if you can play B and A, G should be straightforward). Of course, double check to ensure you have the right fingering (and if you have an open-hole flute, as mentioned above, be sure the holes are fully and firmly covered/closed).

And...how is the F? If yo can get B, A and F, but G fails completely...if you've got the fingering right, then your flute could easily be in need of a repair.
