beginning headjoint only sounds

Is it normal for a complete beginner to find it easier to be consistent making a closed headjoint sound than open?

Some people experience that. Most likely its because the closed tube offers more resistance and some beginners find that makes it easier to produce the sound. Just keep at it. You'll get the hang of it...
